Maybe that's too strong a word, but either way, things have changed. A few years ago, at the mention of a spoonful of snow on a patch of grass with a janky, homemade box I was pulling on snowpants; I followed early season jib parties like a New England liberal arts college student follows Phish reunion concerts. And it was awesome. I got bruisey, muddy, and tired and had a great time. But now, I've entered into my mid-twenties and I've found a much more exciting way to enjoy early-season sessions: spectating. Watching gives you the chance to witness the carnage of too little snow, sticky boxes and muddy landings first hand, while eating some snacks, hanging out, and acting like you're too cool to actually snowboard before there's actual snow on the ground. It's ideal, really. Getting older is awesome.<br /><br />So it is with that in mind that I hung out at Darkside Killington's end of summer sale/rail jam. It was a beautiful day out, the grill was cooking dogs and I even snagged a warm beer from a friend to wash it all down with. Kids had come from all over Vermont to get an early taste of winter and while they jibbed their young brains out, everyone else, myself included, had a great time hanging out. It's always nice to get a little snowboard in your summer day, and it was great Darkside brought the shred that day. They always throw a good party. Thanks so much to everyone at Darkside Killington for hosting the rail jam and bbq.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlO_dy-Ye-cJzRjx4HQrjBjF6F9XTULzDVnEzMb8v1y_RXiTw3OX7UUYOi4KlKSoaeiIrTq62YLvwDvO_3AEM2LM5-sUC7NO6F8hwOyL2IGeGJUDHT9zdr-6X0QX69RIm2ku6bEczMjDyb/s1600-h/August+08+026.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlO_dy-Ye-cJzRjx4HQrjBjF6F9XTULzDVnEzMb8v1y_RXiTw3OX7UUYOi4KlKSoaeiIrTq62YLvwDvO_3AEM2LM5-sUC7NO6F8hwOyL2IGeGJUDHT9zdr-6X0QX69RIm2ku6bEczMjDyb/s400/August+08+026.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244472696113142978" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Ir6a2JmN-002EkS1MuW9Ws3rJNZ0Gx82VwABqs-7L9FggZa8WhuTX8_hV9lcXUfA_fLstenOdkMKWreJoQcFn59r84XgymSlTAOjDbhgmLETFWEKzkNs51RrotgClHvyjL9hRkXDZm-v/s1600-h/August+08+024.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Ir6a2JmN-002EkS1MuW9Ws3rJNZ0Gx82VwABqs-7L9FggZa8WhuTX8_hV9lcXUfA_fLstenOdkMKWreJoQcFn59r84XgymSlTAOjDbhgmLETFWEKzkNs51RrotgClHvyjL9hRkXDZm-v/s400/August+08+024.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244472678056975026" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOx1UXcD7uilf9ar_B5URFXfER1b5qjHcqbaBrjh6cPdhqON49J2qzNffe94ehGTrXzm0rbwGmWzdER4gnztY93ZUqcuZN9fxeu3ksLupvJu5EvF5Ia9UWV6dgghQXo3fgeqAjCBKE4dd-/s1600-h/August+08+028.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOx1UXcD7uilf9ar_B5URFXfER1b5qjHcqbaBrjh6cPdhqON49J2qzNffe94ehGTrXzm0rbwGmWzdER4gnztY93ZUqcuZN9fxeu3ksLupvJu5EvF5Ia9UWV6dgghQXo3fgeqAjCBKE4dd-/s400/August+08+028.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244472704673105506" border="0" /></a>marhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12328999574848697478noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7646261342863784065.post-31099670104801119012008-09-01T07:49:00.001-07:002008-09-01T07:49:36.788-07:00Metal work in MorrisvilleFriday, August 29, River Arts Center in Morrisville, VT held an opening for John Rubino's "Anatomy of a Calamity", a sculpture project featuring not only Rubino's pieces but also the work of five high schoolers who interned on the project. Hans Mindnich, one of the Red Bull am team riders, displayed his series of iron figures that depicted the five stages of a person going through a traumatic event, smaller versions inspired from Rubino's concept of how people are able to become stronger despite hardship. The turn out was good, the teens had insightful things to say about their experience which they explained to the crowd, and there was tons of hors d'oeurves. Not bad.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAOtolFlB0DK6z_ZqVasD_iE9tWzIoIBoMq_TUbwkHB01rGIm6HNPCOOmvCotT9dIpDjH0V1VYyMIG-8Lp-dc1ZR7OATRazP0VXdF_u9xVAodo8bnPzI3e7R7FTnLiuTdr3bDgaNj6KSX3/s1600-h/August+08+003.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAOtolFlB0DK6z_ZqVasD_iE9tWzIoIBoMq_TUbwkHB01rGIm6HNPCOOmvCotT9dIpDjH0V1VYyMIG-8Lp-dc1ZR7OATRazP0VXdF_u9xVAodo8bnPzI3e7R7FTnLiuTdr3bDgaNj6KSX3/s400/August+08+003.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240719967860160338" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Rubino presents the sculptures.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_wtO6ZZnvN2agoL4tYpgDbvu8NR3HJ0dQPtpJLeMXNSeCu52lprW_fXc5JcpZh-yN9lRwAcheHcW3V9mmhARIjUPGul_6JJ-mtGH4SFCgLk8hEeGnAa_vLhfw_nBMckewhMg04TFoyku7/s1600-h/August+08+009.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_wtO6ZZnvN2agoL4tYpgDbvu8NR3HJ0dQPtpJLeMXNSeCu52lprW_fXc5JcpZh-yN9lRwAcheHcW3V9mmhARIjUPGul_6JJ-mtGH4SFCgLk8hEeGnAa_vLhfw_nBMckewhMg04TFoyku7/s400/August+08+009.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240719973176126498" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Hans' version of metal.</span> <span style="font-size:85%;">Insert Iron Maiden metal reference here. </span>marhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12328999574848697478noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7646261342863784065.post-76913108014784042652008-08-31T22:14:00.000-07:002008-08-31T22:33:32.161-07:00Hampton Beach and HardcoreWhen people think about the coast of New England, they generally picture sandy beaches speckled in rocky outcroppings, waves rolling in with families playing in the whitewater, seagulls circling overhead trying to find sandwiches, and maybe some lobster boats off in the distance. Souvenir shops, bar-filled boardwalks and beaches so busy they have to be raked at night sounds more New Jersey than New England. Welcome to Hampton Beach--a little bit of NJ right in NH.<br /><br />I journeyed to Hampton Beach last Wednesday night to attend a concert on the sand, to benefit military families who have lost someone overseas. Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent and noble cause and I hope that it was a successful evening for the organization throwing the event, but this doesn't take away from Hampton Beach being a very weird place, and the music that evening only enhanced said weirdness.<br /><br />Living in Burlington, Vermont, I am surrounded by a large number of bands that would classify themselves within the "jam band" genre. This is not exactly my favorite kind of music, so I appreciated the local hardcore bands that were playing the benefit in Hampton. However, my appreciation does not cause me to miss the inherent strangeness of hardcore bands playing a night show on a sandy beach. This is weird because: one, seeing people mosh in sand is the only thing more embarrassing than seeing them mosh in not sand, and two, hardcore kids don't ever go outside, let along to the beach--those kids are perpetually pale--and the situation they were forced into in order to see their favorite bands caused the black-shirted, converse-wearing crowd to intermingle with the bright-bikini, ripped-jeans group. Awkward at best.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmiNBjMMz54Ht8BMkszlOuBeoneAkJ987VWG8IgQARlhbvVZIhYQAMDx6kHITCfs90RGd8g18aq3Ez7xjswwGbHivNr76e9JkIui7dWxdwwd0crTL4UMGooxHhpAFYddkdvby1zHSRGkDY/s1600-h/beach1.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmiNBjMMz54Ht8BMkszlOuBeoneAkJ987VWG8IgQARlhbvVZIhYQAMDx6kHITCfs90RGd8g18aq3Ez7xjswwGbHivNr76e9JkIui7dWxdwwd0crTL4UMGooxHhpAFYddkdvby1zHSRGkDY/s400/beach1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240920416892486274" border="0" /></a></span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Ever seen a hardcore show at a beach? Manny Mania draws tons of pro skaters, many who don't compete generally. The contest format, legit judging (Steve Berra and Eric Koston were two of the judges), and mellow vibe make it a competition with a unique feel. This year the list of pros was ridiculous: Joey Brezenski, Eli Reed, Kelly Hart, Brandon Biebel, Kenny Anderson, Jason Dill, Chico Brenes, Jereme Rogers, Rob Welsh, Stefan Janoski, Dan Murphy, as well as a ton of other pros who were ready to skate all day in the NYC heat.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg6uQtd147_6wvnXCVMRhrqpp1HM2YgSI8Anfl6iSZYJmGHtCxtSsBvyYkH7FsjCEBGb315Ch0DdiKiE7wxqgjVMUue2wgmWLsQrCgIkmhxUErnLGy9YkAQtu00wTAUx9z6bRmz_LEHM4n/s1600-h/NYC+trip+112.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg6uQtd147_6wvnXCVMRhrqpp1HM2YgSI8Anfl6iSZYJmGHtCxtSsBvyYkH7FsjCEBGb315Ch0DdiKiE7wxqgjVMUue2wgmWLsQrCgIkmhxUErnLGy9YkAQtu00wTAUx9z6bRmz_LEHM4n/s400/NYC+trip+112.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240910692461878130" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Lounging in the VIP area pre-comp.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6DmsZaFSzvdQf7aA96zHAnCW3tWUR7I8ZHXOzi3i1byhKczJyb3sX2HL8bWhtiho_nGEqLBrvEd2TwYUYV93pjGW9eEeFnWrlS7mnDTAFuOfj1q9KdFsafnvuROIlfJX7UztODdhHuzTk/s1600-h/NYC+trip+174.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6DmsZaFSzvdQf7aA96zHAnCW3tWUR7I8ZHXOzi3i1byhKczJyb3sX2HL8bWhtiho_nGEqLBrvEd2TwYUYV93pjGW9eEeFnWrlS7mnDTAFuOfj1q9KdFsafnvuROIlfJX7UztODdhHuzTk/s400/NYC+trip+174.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240897321184634370" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Manny pad session.</span><br /><br />From the very beginning of the extended practice the skating was nuts. The bank to wall was snake city, with everyone trying to get hits in. Everyone was stutterstepping to get their turn to rush the bank in order to have enough speed to hit the wall. One guy was dropping off the top of the wall to the transition below, which seemed fairly gnarly until another guy dropped off the front of the wall onto the flat, switch. I went down with Forest Bailey, one of the Red Bull snow am team members, and Dillon Buss, winner of Manny Mania Manchester last June. I was supposed to show them around New York, but I don't know anything about the city so we were at the mercy of whatever random person gave us directions at any given time...which I guess explains why our first attempt to find the Banks led us on a 45 minute skate on the trash-filled streets down by the East River and ended at LES skatepark (we then found out that LES is a seven minute skate directly down Allen St. from our hotel. oops.).<br /><br />We were staying in a hotel in the hear of the Lower East Side which meant two things: first, we were a short skate away from both the LES skatepark and Brooklyn Banks, which was great because we were to spend all our time at those places over the course of the weekend and second, we were staying in a hotel that was way nicer than any place any of us had ever been allowed inside before. We were definitely the biggest dirtbags there, but I think the hotel employees found it novel that we carried skateboards everywhere we went and that we always looked a little sweaty. The Plan B team was staying there as well, so I think the staff figured we, too, were important professional skateboarders. This of course, is far from the truth. Luckily, they were paid to be nice to us (plus I think we may be the nicest people who have ever stayed there, one staff person told Dillon that we didn't need to say thank you so much) and the concierge gave us tons of help by drawing directions on postcard-sized maps of the Lower East Side.<br /><br />Friday's highlights include:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibG6cNlxku0TI9k6qe5uq9ZxMlFkTnx2kv-d4MbEvAOkHoQmaXwUJXE7gtOBYa5fbXIYK2CGLuLjH_Y8D3SozasNpIrlMRxds518NEXNwCW4noNwPijn6AM-bR8jV5a732-Div8TbE4wvU/s1600-h/NYC+trip+008.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibG6cNlxku0TI9k6qe5uq9ZxMlFkTnx2kv-d4MbEvAOkHoQmaXwUJXE7gtOBYa5fbXIYK2CGLuLjH_Y8D3SozasNpIrlMRxds518NEXNwCW4noNwPijn6AM-bR8jV5a732-Div8TbE4wvU/s400/NYC+trip+008.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237187056842512178" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Skating around the streets of the Lower East Side</span>.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXFFmdL1Hxc6DSZbxAPbDcxWX98FIAzE393R2n86tociZuqE8C9JYx2-I2q8x-qVxSBBk3CGl2wJ7gdlRYAh3C3skzETJOyUA_J47j6t9SgCWSLHqvVp2H_SRs55O-4qztkMx_r3-8NmvD/s1600-h/NYC+trip+018.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXFFmdL1Hxc6DSZbxAPbDcxWX98FIAzE393R2n86tociZuqE8C9JYx2-I2q8x-qVxSBBk3CGl2wJ7gdlRYAh3C3skzETJOyUA_J47j6t9SgCWSLHqvVp2H_SRs55O-4qztkMx_r3-8NmvD/s400/NYC+trip+018.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237187512807359970" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">LES skatepark under the Manhattan Bridge. Two events were going on and it was my good fortune to need to be at both of them. At Highlands Mountain there was a pro mountain bike slopestyle: the first Claymore Challenge. Highlands is really pushing freestyle mountain biking on the east coast with their progressive terrain--for this competition they carved a huge dirt slopstyle course in sideways snaking lanes--filled with gap jumps, a hip, a wooden quarter pipe, a huge wall ride, the Aaron Chase signature feature (which was like the mountain bike equivalent of a roof-shaped butter box), and a big booter at the end. I was at Highlands for Friday's practice and Saturday's competition, and while I saw a lot of backflips, I also witnessed a lot of spinning, supermaning and a move actually called the humper--all things that look pretty gnarly on a bike because if you fall there's a lot of metal to impale yourself on.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGTJ9dPXjRaBlc_vi8dqqVkTa7A9xhL7IcnbTO_iolIC6Z5L6lDoE3Q7sMVofzJ9CV-IYGe04ADNfFw9Z4DIF_OWmXF9aJIIrCPABqnURzSElphtE7fQHSombktcjAGW78mgMzgsjtPZbQ/s1600-h/DSCN4131.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGTJ9dPXjRaBlc_vi8dqqVkTa7A9xhL7IcnbTO_iolIC6Z5L6lDoE3Q7sMVofzJ9CV-IYGe04ADNfFw9Z4DIF_OWmXF9aJIIrCPABqnURzSElphtE7fQHSombktcjAGW78mgMzgsjtPZbQ/s400/DSCN4131.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229601941518608706" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">This is another reason biking is crazier than snowboarding: hiking back up with a bike. no fun.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnbKYI-I9G6PAepUNlEZJm1GtRcQM9asOiUbNt22dh67aWnHPptl8Am_NXbgmJT0g6if6BtBor1WB-jRii95oa2P7cd0u5eHgMG3OI2mmpDkD0l-kaejeaaXkTKAii9zdJq8AUiYkFamSi/s1600-h/DSCN4241.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnbKYI-I9G6PAepUNlEZJm1GtRcQM9asOiUbNt22dh67aWnHPptl8Am_NXbgmJT0g6if6BtBor1WB-jRii95oa2P7cd0u5eHgMG3OI2mmpDkD0l-kaejeaaXkTKAii9zdJq8AUiYkFamSi/s400/DSCN4241.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229620924654453762" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Seat grabber.</span><br /><br />Pro bikers came out from all over the US and Canada to hit the course, a fairly good-sized crowd assembled and DJ ZJ from Burlington's Lotus Entertainment spun tunes (mountain bikers are the most picky athletes about their music I have ever seen. no: Chicago, Britney Spears. yes: Rage Against the Machine, Metallica. Wait, maybe that's more obvious than I first thought?). The riders competed against each other for first place: bragging rights, respect from their peers, money, and a giant five-foot-long knight's sword. Second place: a smaller sword, and third, in no way a reference to the finisher's manly ability to spin and flip their way down a serious dirt course: a dagger.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkOfAdU0l0UUhdcDiML7vBI_X_H53bIGnJN5_W-QLNgtTCFZgl5bAJ94MhG5qS8Kez5rxUp0wvMvJXBxXUD-GWnyqIJR35EfkT7S7rOoMhgRa8usAPIuZJLxARc9S_e8fzCScHPNfMB56V/s1600-h/DSCN4184.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkOfAdU0l0UUhdcDiML7vBI_X_H53bIGnJN5_W-QLNgtTCFZgl5bAJ94MhG5qS8Kez5rxUp0wvMvJXBxXUD-GWnyqIJR35EfkT7S7rOoMhgRa8usAPIuZJLxARc9S_e8fzCScHPNfMB56V/s400/DSCN4184.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229614626341043554" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Bikes.</span><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPBWmt9iEG4oRcm9ruprYFHq1wVw2r7o0W4tCXv8eNSanmJmFL6SpA4woeaTKe2OrnldMXuctf4MpNLoTqfrVBHn8OofExGmkKeu6j8iTs2PqPbEMx20umva-v9tDJwT6xffuvaxH3QuKY/s1600-h/DSCN4173.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPBWmt9iEG4oRcm9ruprYFHq1wVw2r7o0W4tCXv8eNSanmJmFL6SpA4woeaTKe2OrnldMXuctf4MpNLoTqfrVBHn8OofExGmkKeu6j8iTs2PqPbEMx20umva-v9tDJwT6xffuvaxH3QuKY/s400/DSCN4173.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229601953085781810" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Super leg kick.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1cectyH9LA3WisxbGQRNCWH9SvW0DWShbsvXBnwM267jP2NMpQsFFBCzm-SFSVGC0-5YGdn5FPYuQnOr4a22kHfLQovYKIDm3xFV5GrstxZh8ezQbx8zXsxQgCa63CA2KCQ17w6JNDrle/s1600-h/DSCN4175.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1cectyH9LA3WisxbGQRNCWH9SvW0DWShbsvXBnwM267jP2NMpQsFFBCzm-SFSVGC0-5YGdn5FPYuQnOr4a22kHfLQovYKIDm3xFV5GrstxZh8ezQbx8zXsxQgCa63CA2KCQ17w6JNDrle/s400/DSCN4175.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229619435333772130" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">I'm not sure how this actually works, but he landed it.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhObJX19PWyqtYVnyYWkzrcHzy_aAiES01szSkT_TSnR5lNgzv_embdph5nf0sUx2GGVwrkBdWHtlGKDNAVgLkXP_GKdSS561-91zzAS3DLfGyFG3HDDkhtX0slOnvijyouuTQSzrbCoYvy/s1600-h/DSCN4228.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhObJX19PWyqtYVnyYWkzrcHzy_aAiES01szSkT_TSnR5lNgzv_embdph5nf0sUx2GGVwrkBdWHtlGKDNAVgLkXP_GKdSS561-91zzAS3DLfGyFG3HDDkhtX0slOnvijyouuTQSzrbCoYvy/s400/DSCN4228.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229614642732564610" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">If I had a better camera, this wouldn't look blurry, but you get the idea. I'm taking a week off while I snowboard in Oregon, but I'll be back after to let my team down by being the weakest member again next week.marhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12328999574848697478noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7646261342863784065.post-92107514722301602762008-07-09T15:58:00.000-07:002008-07-09T16:54:46.251-07:00Red Bull Manny Mania in Manchester, NH 6/28<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb026dfUOpgAwp6UdT0Yst0kpsHQyu6n64RAMi-z0d9XatIs5L7Ta-yt9XE3Jr8z30-xVGO7kaaL_pemV0GZYYShhvHS_sTx_t2Mmszq0XPyoIV-18510KvZBUzT1EjdP7iKdB9yPKb8Ld/s1600-h/manny+mania+me.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb026dfUOpgAwp6UdT0Yst0kpsHQyu6n64RAMi-z0d9XatIs5L7Ta-yt9XE3Jr8z30-xVGO7kaaL_pemV0GZYYShhvHS_sTx_t2Mmszq0XPyoIV-18510KvZBUzT1EjdP7iKdB9yPKb8Ld/s400/manny+mania+me.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221159483453559266" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family:arial;">Workin. Sixty-five competitors showed up to skate the Red Bull custom-built many pad, a three part box consisting of a c box, an up down, and a flat box with a mini curb a third of the way down its length. There was a huge showing by the NH and greater New England skate community; skaters ranged from 10 years old to a group of 30-somethings, and came from as far away as Rutland, Vermont and Springfield, Massachusetts. The sessions began around 1pm and for the next few hours, the crowd was entertained by heats of skaters pulling out consistently technical and creative tricks.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXK0tzoGGNWeJCm6I2-Ve7ouCgSBv98MKC2Ccr-W0XcxXNW061sMY3sVJiInEllFh0rsa5-ik6kgMdPyAdLOOrQsjKtUxUryYEugaMUgVmUcId6zGlUBK0aW8Ll4Ctt1Zc2l8KMtRJH7Ns/s1600-h/Dylan.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXK0tzoGGNWeJCm6I2-Ve7ouCgSBv98MKC2Ccr-W0XcxXNW061sMY3sVJiInEllFh0rsa5-ik6kgMdPyAdLOOrQsjKtUxUryYEugaMUgVmUcId6zGlUBK0aW8Ll4Ctt1Zc2l8KMtRJH7Ns/s400/Dylan.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221161151421265954" border="0" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">Dillon Buss running the manny pad. photo: LAustin</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><br /></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><span style=""> </span>The judges narrowed down the groups and in semis the skaters really stepped it up, throwing the kind of technical trickery that made the wise and hardened judges literally jump from their seats shouting. Mark Nicholson was consistently skating well, and last year’s Manny Mania Boston winner, Marshall Heath, was attempting tons of very challenging switch tricks, one standout being a switch heelflip manual. Dillon Buss was shredding every part of the pad, coming in with kickflip nose manuals, kickflip manual fs 180, and a couple grind in shuv-it out variations. Buss got tons of cheers from the crowd with fast and big wallies off the curb on the flat box.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><span style=""> </span>By the time finals rolled around, the five skaters left were beat, but still skating like they were fresh. Marshall landed a nose manny nollie big spin and Nate Jackson was just killing it all over the place, landing too many tricks to name. Kyle Burroughs was skating super strong as well. But, it was Buss, who had come all the way up to Manchester from Cape Cod, who just kept landing everything (including a sick nose manual shuv-it manual), hitting a wide variety of tech tricks and big ollies over the curb. </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">Results:</p> <p class="MsoNormal" We were setting up for Matchstick Productions' shoot of Aaron Chase and co on the new Red Bull dirtpipe. For the mountain bikers, it was dirt-digging, step-downing, bike-riding fun, for me and Matt it was more rain-pouring, exacto-knife-cutting, brand-wielding intensity. I had a good time, despite the mental exhaustion and gnarly mosquitos. And I got to tool around the resort on one of the 50s, which was the best thing ever. I found a natual kicker on the side of the road and got pretty rad. It was awesome.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhToWQjO-E8PSDRDbWBq_X0kGEp4_xzmIYUArphtrS3YdNO3yjByg95LQgDSKz06Hp8x0772nJCJVnRQZC4fixnj4unilnJGIM4EguWO7PaGpMW7VpL2hE1cDYPmcD44kdvB-bX2dpsx5mV/s1600-h/dirtpipe.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhToWQjO-E8PSDRDbWBq_X0kGEp4_xzmIYUArphtrS3YdNO3yjByg95LQgDSKz06Hp8x0772nJCJVnRQZC4fixnj4unilnJGIM4EguWO7PaGpMW7VpL2hE1cDYPmcD44kdvB-bX2dpsx5mV/s400/dirtpipe.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220365633416606610" border="0" /></a><br />This picture, that I stole from a mountain biking wesbite (thank you Christopher Vanderyajt), is probably from around 11pm when Matt, Jenner and myself were attempting to set up the Red Bull logo on the front of the step down pictured. I'm not sure what I'm holding in the picture, but probably a lot of duct tape or something else that I'm wearily trying to figure out, while all of the mountain bikers around me are pounding Coors Light and airing over my head into the pipe. Long night, but considering this is what I classify as work, I was stoked to be there.marhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12328999574848697478noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7646261342863784065.post-29383628996885394312008-06-15T15:51:00.000-07:002008-07-10T10:46:11.151-07:00Embasi King of Skate 6/15<span style="font-size:85%;"><span id="ctl00_cpMain_BulletinRead_ltl_body">Yesterday was Embasi's first contest in the three-part King of NH series they're hosting this summer at the West Lebanon skatepark. I chauffered our djs, ZJ and Jason Baron, down to the event so they could provide some tunes for the skaters.<br /><br />Embasi covers all its bases to be a killer shop--they have edgy softgood brands, solid hardgoods selection, they press their own skatedecks, and the guys that run the place are knowledgable, chill and super friendly. They're also very community oriented and host a ton of events for boardsports-types in the Lebanon area. Their reputation was apparent with the large turn out yesterday at the skatepark--about 40 skaters competed, from super young to old enough to know who Matt Hensley is. The third place winner had his son there with him, who looked about three and only wanted to try finger flips or some similar trick I can't identify.<br /><br />It was super humid but no one seemed to mind. Oakley and DC had set up tents and gave away so much swag to kids it was awesome. We brought a ton of Red Bull of course.<br /><br />The West Leb skatepark is set up horizontally, if that makes sense, and when the Advanced Finals took place, the quarter pipe on the far end was getting slayed. I have never seen that much boosting at a park at one time--there is a solid skate scene in that area. After the winners were announced, someone wheeled a Red Bull cooler over in front of a launch ramp and kids started sessioning it. Oakley and DC announced a Best Trick contest over the impromtu Red Bull can bonk for some shoes and sunglasses. Not to be cliche, but that kind of creative sessioning is what it should be about.<br /><br />I wish I had written down the names of the winners, because I definitely have some pictures of them, but apparently I'm bad at remembering to do that. The next event is in July and I'll bring a notebook.<br /></span></span><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuO9t4tLZyExX3PnIcI6gHSbwZ6Qka3dSpvx0pINDWXujhOce3CJAtcZ_mKFjoNhrWjgkkIYHB6IGRe7S2NqH4CLpi7ypennU6IWytJrES9MwNCU7XH7Kv-iODUkqNJr6DqmHuaqdpVrTE/s1600-h/june+08+062.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuO9t4tLZyExX3PnIcI6gHSbwZ6Qka3dSpvx0pINDWXujhOce3CJAtcZ_mKFjoNhrWjgkkIYHB6IGRe7S2NqH4CLpi7ypennU6IWytJrES9MwNCU7XH7Kv-iODUkqNJr6DqmHuaqdpVrTE/s400/june+08+062.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212251218272274722" border="0" /></a><br />Mike Rheault tweaked on the quarter.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhePD3iTga5-hNJ0FVpF2YTDdB1f4yyP4WQNNrMLkGHB_03KttWI0qNCDBNs0yXpou9NI3pCQQoTpw6WCgfgmNRu7te7vwrC1aDO3iVkUvQG-kDhg05mnGqp84ANT_LLA3brxmPLE7bfj-R/s1600-h/june+08+101.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhePD3iTga5-hNJ0FVpF2YTDdB1f4yyP4WQNNrMLkGHB_03KttWI0qNCDBNs0yXpou9NI3pCQQoTpw6WCgfgmNRu7te7vwrC1aDO3iVkUvQG-kDhg05mnGqp84ANT_LLA3brxmPLE7bfj-R/s400/june+08+101.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212251488866269906" border="0" /></a><br />John Huff snapped his tail when he finally landed this and then he grabbed another board and hit it some more.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpGpLaAzAl3BMguybsEqrA18uNhvha24w3RSJbnicmhHa7qHm-tnYjoj7wON8wR2j9o31vdJ1-cm_Gu3RjBbdLErewhTVR1ys7o9qEqSipUHY0xR0rT85MVhfWUjeetRU_wU9ctaUQvlPe/s1600-h/june+08+014.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpGpLaAzAl3BMguybsEqrA18uNhvha24w3RSJbnicmhHa7qHm-tnYjoj7wON8wR2j9o31vdJ1-cm_Gu3RjBbdLErewhTVR1ys7o9qEqSipUHY0xR0rT85MVhfWUjeetRU_wU9ctaUQvlPe/s400/june+08+014.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212250622553924786" border="0" /></a><br />Keith from Embasi ran around in the humidity keeping everything on lock and providing the NH skate scene with a great outlet for shredding wood and pavement.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0XBjCBhiMjeM3OJ0PIwMPr8hBUOI9YGSG9oE4wx3AQToPm76v3nl0Snh_i898WH3XeBJOltsMIp1twHr7X8GU5mgavJvYuvDVhyZqBvB37oQcKihG3KN0mOnmz6pNFoh8g22YYSYS6RjY/s1600-h/june+08+052.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0XBjCBhiMjeM3OJ0PIwMPr8hBUOI9YGSG9oE4wx3AQToPm76v3nl0Snh_i898WH3XeBJOltsMIp1twHr7X8GU5mgavJvYuvDVhyZqBvB37oQcKihG3KN0mOnmz6pNFoh8g22YYSYS6RjY/s400/june+08+052.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212252315747591618" border="0" /></a><br />This guy was killing it all day--super fast and smooth.
